1. Graphene — University of Manchester, 2004
Andre Geim and Konstantin Novoselov isolated graphene — a single atomic layer of carbon, the thinnest and strongest material known — using little more than graphite and sticky tape. The pair won the 2010 Nobel Prize in Physics.
2. Splitting the Atom — University of Manchester, 1919
Ernest Rutherford achieved the first artificial nuclear reaction at Manchester, changing physics forever — a follow-up to the Manchester experiments that had already revealed the atomic nucleus.
3. The First Stored-Program Computer — University of Manchester, 1948
The Manchester "Baby", built by Freddie Williams and Tom Kilburn, ran the world's first stored program in June 1948. Alan Turing joined Manchester soon after to work on its successor — the ancestor of every computer on earth.
4. The Structure of DNA — University of Cambridge, 1953
James Watson and Francis Crick determined the double helix at Cambridge's Cavendish Laboratory, building on X-ray diffraction images produced by Rosalind Franklin and colleagues at King's College London.
5. Penicillin — St Mary's Hospital Medical School, London, 1928
Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin at St Mary's — now part of Imperial College London — launching the antibiotic age that has saved hundreds of millions of lives.
6. MRI Scanning — University of Nottingham
Sir Peter Mansfield's work at Nottingham turned magnetic resonance into a practical medical imaging technique, earning the 2003 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.
7. The Cavity Magnetron — University of Birmingham, 1940
John Randall and Harry Boot built the cavity magnetron at Birmingham, transforming wartime radar — and later powering every microwave oven ever made.
8. The Higgs Boson — University of Edinburgh, 1964
Peter Higgs predicted the particle that gives matter its mass while at Edinburgh. CERN confirmed it in 2012, and Higgs shared the 2013 Nobel Prize in Physics.
9. The Lithium-Ion Battery Cathode — University of Oxford, 1980
John Goodenough's Oxford team developed the cobalt-oxide cathode that made rechargeable lithium-ion batteries practical — recognised with the 2019 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.
10. Watt's Separate Condenser — University of Glasgow, 1765
While working as an instrument maker at the University of Glasgow, James Watt conceived the separate condenser that transformed the steam engine — arguably the spark of the Industrial Revolution.
11. Hormones — UCL, 1902
William Bayliss and Ernest Starling discovered secretin at UCL and coined the very word "hormone", founding modern endocrinology.
12. X-Ray Crystallography — University of Leeds, 1912–1915
William Henry Bragg's work at Leeds, with his son Lawrence, established X-ray crystallography — the technique later used to reveal the structure of DNA itself — winning the 1915 Nobel Prize in Physics.
