Graduation Hoodies and Gifts: Printed Tops for Nursery, College and University Graduates

Graduation Hoodies and Gifts: Printed Tops for Nursery, College and University Graduates

Graduation means different things at different ages. For a four-year-old leaving nursery it is a small ceremony with a paper hat and a lot of photographs. For a student finishing a degree it is the end of years of work, often celebrated with friends who will soon be scattered across the country. A printed hoodie or T-shirt can mark either one. This page covers both ends: nursery and reception graduations, and college and university graduations, with notes on designs, sizes, group orders and timing. FabricForge prints from a single item upwards and delivers with DPD, Royal Mail, Parcelforce or our relay parcel service.

Nursery and reception graduations

Many nurseries and pre-schools now hold a graduation ceremony for children moving up to school. The children wear gowns and caps for the photograph, and parents often want something printed to keep.

What to print

The child's name, the nursery's name and the year are the essentials. A small illustration such as a pencil, a book or a star adds charm. Because the children are small, keep the design simple and the text large enough to read in a photograph.

Sizes

Our children's range begins at age 3 and runs to 16. This suits most children leaving nursery, though the youngest may be too small for age 3. Check with us before ordering if you are not sure, and measure a top the child already wears.

Group orders

For a nursery, the staff usually collect sizes and names from parents, then place one order. Ask parents to give the child's name exactly as it should appear, and set a closing date. Nurseries sometimes want a staff version with the same design, which can sit in the same order in adult sizes from S to 5XL. Our guide to Year 6 and P7 leavers hoodies covers the primary-school version, and school T-shirt printing covers the wider process.

College and sixth-form graduations

For students finishing college or sixth form, the hoodie is a well-established tradition. The design is often a joke or a list of names, with the year in large numbers. See school leavers hoodies for the full picture of how those orders run, including how to agree a design and collect money.

University graduations

A university graduate can have several different celebrations: a ceremony, a family lunch and a night out with friends. The printed item that goes with them is usually a hoodie or T-shirt in a design that captures the course or the group.

Designs that graduates choose

  • The degree title and year. Neat, formal and easy to keep.
  • The course cohort. "Class of 2027: BSc Biology" with a small icon.
  • Society or team versions. Hockey club, drama society or a house of students. See university society hoodies.
  • A joke about the dissertation. Always a favourite.
  • Names on the back. A whole friendship group's names, which makes a good photograph and a lasting memory.

Graduation gifts for one person

A parent or partner buying a gift for a graduate might choose a hoodie with the degree and the year, a tote bag for carrying work, or a top for the first day of a new job. The message should be about the achievement, not the goal that comes next, so keep it celebratory.

Choosing the garment

We print on T-shirts and hoodies in 14 colours. Black, navy, bottle green and white are the safest choices, though some universities have official colours worth matching. Where there are official colours, the garment can echo them even if the artwork is your own. Oversized fits, from S to 3XL, are popular with students because they are comfortable and easy to wear around campus. Adult sizes run from S to 5XL.

Because graduation involves photographs, consider the colour of the gown. Most gowns are black or dark, so a lighter hoodie under or beside the gown stands out. For an indoor photograph, bright colours help.

Using logos and crests

A university crest or a school logo is protected, so you should only print one if you have permission. If the institution has its own merchandise rules, check them. If you want a design that evokes the place without using its official crest, a skyline, a building outline or a local symbol is often an easy alternative, and it avoids any permission question. We will not print artwork that we think you do not have the right to use.

How a group order works

  1. One person agrees the design with the group and collects sizes and names.
  2. That person messages us the quantity, the date and the list.
  3. Artwork arrives as a PNG or PDF. We adjust sizes and layouts but do not design from scratch.
  4. We confirm and take payment before preparing the mockup.
  5. You approve the mockup, with up to five rounds of changes.
  6. We print and send. Next-day UK delivery is possible once the mockup is approved, depending on timing.

When to order

Graduation dates are known months in advance, which is a gift in itself. Start planning at least a month before the ceremony, and sooner if sizes need to be collected from many people. Remember that the ceremony date may not be the date of the photograph. Finals, results and the ceremony can be several weeks apart, so decide which date the item is for. Delivery should arrive a week before, to leave room for a problem.

Aftercare

A graduation top is a keepsake, so look after it. Wash it inside out on a cool setting, avoid high heat in the dryer, and do not iron on the print. The care guide sets out the steps.

Matching the design to the moment

The mood of a graduation order varies a great deal, and the design should follow it. A nursery graduation is gentle and sweet, so soft colours, rounded lettering and a small drawing suit it. A college leavers' hoodie is loud, with jokes, nicknames and in-references. A university graduation sits in the middle: proud, a little sentimental, and still funny among friends. It helps to decide which of these the group wants before anyone starts sketching. Many disagreements about artwork are really disagreements about mood, and settling that early saves several rounds of changes.

Keepsakes for parents and family

Parents and grandparents often want to join in. A matching top for family members, with the graduate's name and the year, is a pleasant addition to a ceremony photograph. A tote bag with the graduate's name makes a practical present to give on the day. If you plan to include family, add their sizes to the list at the start, since adding people after the mockup is approved means the layout has to be redone. For ideas on coordinated family outfits, the page on matching family outfits discusses sizing across generations.
