Scotland's Events and Music City

Glasgow's roughly 635,000 residents (National Records of Scotland estimate) make it Scotland's largest city, home to a packed live events calendar anchored by the SEC/OVO Hydro and the Barrowland Ballroom. Merchant City and Finnieston host most of the city's independent bars and restaurants, the University of Glasgow and University of Strathclyde bring a large student population that drives demand for event print throughout the year, and Partick and the West End add their own cluster of independent shops and cafes with regular print needs.

What Glasgow Orders

Merchant City and Finnieston bars and restaurants order menus and window signage. Event promoters order gig posters and flyers for shows at the Barrowland and SEC/Hydro. University societies at Glasgow and Strathclyde order event posters. Independent shops in Partick and the West End order business cards and flyers.

  • Menus and window signage for Merchant City and Finnieston venues
  • Gig posters and event flyers for promoters at the Barrowland and SEC/Hydro
  • Event posters for University of Glasgow and Strathclyde societies
  • Business cards and flyers for independent shops in Partick and the West End
  • Pop-up banners for markets and events
  • Menus and branded print for West End cafes and restaurants

Flyers: what works on a Glasgow street

A flyer has a few seconds to do its job, whether it is handed out on Buchanan Street, left on the counter of a West End café or pushed through doors in the Southside. The ones that work have one clear message, one offer or date, and one way to respond. If you are promoting an event, put the date, venue and time at the top, then a short line on why someone should go, then a website, QR code or phone number. Everything else is optional.

A5 is the most common flyer size because it fits a pocket and is cheap to hand out. A6 works well for quick leaflets and discount cards. DL, a long narrow size that fits a standard envelope, is popular for menus and mailers. If you are not sure which size suits your job, our UK print sizes guide explains the A-series and DL sizes in plain English, and we will recommend a size when you send your brief.

Business cards that get kept

A business card is still the quickest way to hand someone your details at a networking event, a trade show or a shop counter. The standard UK card is 85 mm by 55 mm. Keep the design simple: your name, your role or what you do, one phone number or email, and a website or social handle. A bit of white space makes a card look more professional than a crowded one. Think about the paper as well: a thicker card feels more substantial in the hand, and our paper stock and GSM guide explains what the weights mean so you can choose with confidence. We confirm the stock and finish available for your job in your quote.

Menus and window signage for hospitality

Glasgow has one of the busiest food and drink scenes in Scotland, and menus are one of the most common print jobs we are asked about. A good menu is easy to read in low light, easy to wipe or replace and consistent with your branding. For window signage, think about what people see from across the street: large lettering, strong contrast and no more than a few lines. If your menu changes often, tell us at the start so we can suggest a format that is cheap to reprint. Our signage and large format page covers banners and bigger display print in more detail.

Gig posters and event promotion

Promoters in Glasgow often need posters and flyers on a tight timeline, with the date and venue changing as an event is confirmed. Plan your print around your promotion window: posters usually need to be up well before the date, flyers are most useful in the final few weeks, and a last small run can cover late additions to a line-up. Send us the final artwork as early as you can, and tell us the date it needs to be in your hands. We will say honestly what is realistic. For events that repeat, such as monthly club nights, keep the layout the same and only change the date, so reprints are quick.

Society posters and student events

Student societies at the University of Glasgow and the University of Strathclyde run events all year, from welcome fairs to charity nights. Posters need to be clear from a few metres away and should include the date, place, price and a way to find out more. A QR code that links to a sign-up page or ticket link works well on a noticeboard. If your society also wants hoodies or stash, see our university society hoodies page.

Getting your artwork ready

Most print delays come from artwork, not printing. These checks save time:

  • Use high-resolution images. Around 300 dpi at the final print size is the usual target. A picture saved from a website will look soft when printed.
  • Add bleed. If your design runs to the edge of the page, extend the background by about 3 mm beyond the trim line so there is no white sliver after cutting.
  • Keep important text inside a safe margin. Allow a few millimetres from the edge so nothing is trimmed off.
  • Use a print-ready PDF where possible. If you only have a Word file or an image, send it anyway and we will tell you if it needs adjusting.
  • Proofread twice. Check phone numbers, dates, web addresses and spellings before you approve. A typo is much cheaper to fix on screen than on paper.
