Promotional Pens with Your Logo: Branded, Printed and Engraved Pens UK

Pens are the hardest-working promotional item in Britain. They are cheap to hand out, nobody refuses one, and they travel from reception desks to kitchen drawers to car door pockets, carrying your name with them. FabricForge supplies branded pens printed with your logo for businesses, schools, charities, hospitals, councils and event teams across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. From pad-printed plastic ballpens for a trade show to laser-engraved metal pens for clients and personalised pens with individual names, every order is proofed first and delivered from the FabricForge production unit nearest to you. We supply promotional pens UK-wide for national campaigns, branded pens for teams in every branch, and personalised pens across the UK for schools, families and gifts, with the same simple process of quote, proof and delivery.

Why the humble pen keeps winning

For all the new gadgets on offer, the British still prefer a pen. Consumer research for the British Promotional Merchandise Association found pens were the number one freebie people in the UK like to take home, with an estimated 150 million promotional pens given away in a single year. Industry reporting from Sourcing City in 2025 placed branded pens second only to bags among the most popular promotional products.

There are good reasons for that. A pen costs little per unit compared with almost any other advertising, so it can be given to everyone rather than only to the most valuable prospects. It is used, not just looked at, and every time someone signs a delivery note, writes a shopping list or lends it to a colleague, your name is seen again. Pens also pass from hand to hand, so one pen can reach several people over its life. Earlier BPMA surveys found more people remembered receiving a promotional pen than any other item, with pens also topping the list of products kept on desks.

Branded pens, logo pens, printed pens: the language explained

Buyers use many names for the same idea, and suppliers often use them loosely. Here is how we think about them, so you can describe what you need:

  • Promotional pens are handed out in quantity to people outside your organisation: at exhibitions, in welcome packs, with deliveries or at the counter.
  • Branded pens carry your logo for use inside and outside the business, from reception and meeting rooms to sales visits. Better quality, often metal, often engraved.
  • Logo pens and pens with logo are simply pens carrying your company mark. The decoration method depends on the pen and the artwork.
  • Printed pens and custom printed pens are decorated with ink, by pad printing or full-colour digital print. Ideal for colourful logos.
  • Engraved pens are marked by laser, cutting the design permanently into the surface. They look premium and the mark cannot rub off.
  • Personalised pens carry an individual name, sometimes alongside a logo. Popular as gifts and for staff, teachers and award winners.
  • Custom pens covers all of the above when the barrel colour, clip, ink colour and branding are chosen to match your brand.

Types of pen we can brand

Choosing the pen first makes everything else easier, because the material decides which branding methods are possible. Tell us which style suits your purpose and we will confirm the available options and colours for your quantity.

  • Plastic retractable ballpens. The workhorse of promotional pen printing. Light, colourful and economical for large giveaways.
  • Soft-touch and rubberised pens. A comfortable grip and a slightly more considered feel, without the cost of metal.
  • Metal pens. Aluminium or brass barrels with a heavier, executive feel. Metal pens with logo engraving are the usual choice for client gifts and awards.
  • Bamboo, wheat-straw and recycled pens. Eco pens for brands with sustainability commitments. Bamboo pens with logo engraving show a natural, warm mark.
  • Stylus pens. A pen at one end and a touchscreen tip at the other. Useful for tech firms, retail and anywhere people sign on tablets.
  • Highlighters and multi-function pens. For education, training providers and offices.
  • Pencils. Personalised pencils are popular with schools, nurseries, golf clubs and libraries. Ask us about availability for your order.

Our best-selling promotional pen, in 8 grip colours

Our most popular promotional pen is a retractable ballpen with a white barrel, a chrome clip and tip, and a soft-touch grip in eight colours: purple, orange, green, red, blue, yellow, black and white. Your logo is printed in full colour on the barrel, so gradients and multi-colour logos come out sharp, and you can pick the grip that matches your brand. The photos below use a sample logo to show the finished look. We can print a matching branded notepad too, so pens and pads arrive as a set.

Not sure which grip colour to choose? Send us your logo and we will suggest the colour that looks best with it.

How the branding is applied

Pens have tiny, curved print areas, often only a few millimetres tall, so the method matters. These are the three main ways pen printing is done:

Pad printing

Ink is lifted from an etched plate by a soft silicone pad, which rolls onto the curved barrel. It is the most common method for plastic promotional pens because it is quick, sharp and economical at volume. Each ink colour is a separate pass, so it suits logos with one or two solid colours rather than photographs or gradients.

Full-colour digital print

A digital printer applies the design in full colour directly onto the pen. It handles gradients and multi-colour logos that pad printing cannot, and the full-colour result is ideal when brand colours are complex. On very heavily used pens, a printed design can wear over time, which is worth considering for pens that will live in a busy workplace.

Laser engraving

A laser removes the top layer of the barrel to reveal the material beneath. On a coated metal pen this usually shows as silver or white against the barrel colour. The mark is permanent and cannot rub off, which is why premium pen brands are engraved rather than printed. Engraving is single-tone, so it suits logos and names rather than colourful artwork. Personalised engraved pens with individual names make excellent long-lasting gifts.

Artwork that works on a pen

The print area on a pen is small, so designs that look perfect on a letterhead can lose detail. A few rules help:

  • Use a simplified logo. Many brands have a compact or single-line version for small spaces. Fine lines and tiny text disappear at pen scale.
  • Keep the message short. Logo plus a web address or phone number is usually the limit. Choose the one detail you want people to act on.
  • Think about contrast. A dark logo on a dark barrel will barely show. White or silver print on dark pens, and dark print on light pens, reads best.
  • Send vector files. AI, EPS, SVG or PDF logos give the cleanest edges. If you only have a PNG or JPEG, send it and we will advise.
  • Match the ink to the purpose. Blue or black writing ink is standard for business. Tell us if you need a particular ink colour for forms or signatures.

Our artwork preparation guide explains file types in more detail, and every order comes with a proof so you can see the layout before anything is printed.

Who uses promotional pens, and how

  • Exhibitors: a pen in every visitor's hand and on every stand table. Many teams keep cheaper pens for the crowd and better metal pens for serious conversations.
  • Trades and home services: a pen left behind after every quote or job, so your number is in the kitchen drawer when it is needed again.
  • Hotels, gyms, salons and clinics: pens at reception and in rooms, often walked off with, which is exactly the point.
  • Banks, solicitors, estate agents and car dealers: signing pens for clients, frequently engraved metal pens given at completion.
  • Schools and nurseries: personalised pens for teachers and staff, pencils for pupils, leavers' gifts and open-day giveaways.
  • Charities: low-cost merchandise for fundraising stalls and thank-you packs for volunteers.
  • NHS and care providers: pens for wards, clinics and recruitment fairs, ordered in large numbers because pens go missing constantly in healthcare.
  • Councils and public bodies: pens for consultations, events and community campaigns.

How many pens should you order?

Pens run out faster than people expect, so most first orders are too small. As a starting point:

  • Exhibition stand: estimate visitors per day, multiply by the number of days, then add a margin. Busy stands get through pens very quickly.
  • Reception and front desk: plan on pens disappearing every week. A quarterly or half-yearly reorder from the same artwork is common.
  • Mailings and welcome packs: one per pack, plus spares for re-sends.
  • Staff and client gifts: one quality pen per person, engraved with a name if you want it to be kept.

Approved artwork stays on file, which makes reordering simple when stock runs low.

Choosing eco promotional pens

Sustainability is now one of the biggest drivers in the promotional products industry, and buyers increasingly ask for recycled or natural materials. Bamboo, wheat-straw composite, recycled plastic and recycled aluminium pens are all options. The greenest pen, though, is one that gets used until it runs out, so a good refillable pen or a comfortable, reliable ballpen is often the better environmental choice than a novelty item that is thrown away. Tell us about any sustainability policy you need to meet when you ask for a quote.

Pairing pens with your other branded items

Pens are often ordered alongside other merchandise carrying the same logo. Common pairings are branded mugs for desks and client gifts, notepads, business cards and stationery, printed tote bags for event packs, and company T-shirts or workwear for the people handing them out. One quote covers everything.

Promotional pen questions

What is the best pen for a trade show giveaway?

A pad-printed plastic retractable ballpen in your brand colour gives the most reach for the budget. Keep a smaller batch of metal pens for important contacts.

Can you engrave individual names on pens?

Yes. Laser engraving and digital printing both allow each pen to carry a different name. Send the names exactly as they should appear.

Can you print a full-colour logo on a pen?

Yes, with full-colour digital printing on suitable pens. Pad printing is better for one- or two-colour logos, and engraving gives a single-tone permanent mark.

Do you offer eco pens?

Yes. Bamboo, recycled plastic, wheat-straw and recycled aluminium pens are available, subject to stock for your quantity.

Do you deliver pens across the UK?

Yes, to England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, from the FabricForge unit nearest to your address.

Can I reorder the same pens later?

Yes. Once artwork is approved it can be reused, so repeat orders are quick to quote.
