Personalised Gifts for Teenagers: Printed Hoodies and T-Shirts They Will Actually Wear

Teenagers are the hardest age group to buy for, partly because their tastes change monthly and partly because they are extremely good at spotting a gift that was chosen by a parent. A printed hoodie or T-shirt can work, but only if it is designed with the teenager in mind and not the adult paying for it. This page is a practical guide to getting that right: how to find an idea, how to avoid the gifts that end up in the wardrobe, and how to order sizes that will fit through the next growth spurt. FabricForge prints from a single item upwards and sends orders by DPD, Royal Mail, Parcelforce or our relay parcel service.

What teenagers want from a gift

If you listen to teenagers describing a gift they liked, three themes come up again and again. They want it to say something about them, they do not want it to look childish, and they want to feel it was chosen with some thought. A personalised hoodie can meet all three, provided the design is simple and the garment is good.

It should look like their taste, not yours

The most important rule. The design should reflect what they are into: a band, a game, a team, a hobby, a joke from their friends. If you are not sure, ask a sibling or a friend. Parents who guess usually guess wrong, and an inappropriate design never gets worn.

It should not try too hard

Teenagers are quick to dismiss anything that looks as if it is trying to be cool. Short, understated designs tend to land better than big, loud ones. A small chest print or a back print is often more popular than a large front design.

It should fit

Nothing destroys a gift faster than a size that does not fit. Teenagers are often between sizes, and many prefer a loose, oversized look, so consider that style from the start.

Gift ideas by interest

Gamers

A username or gamer tag in clean lettering, a team name, or the date of a memorable win. Avoid using logos you do not have the rights to. A personal tag is often better than a commercial one. Our page on custom gaming merch printing goes into this in more detail.

Sports players

A team name with their number and surname, which they can wear off the pitch. Boys and girls alike like this style. See sports team kit printing for the group version.

Music fans

Personal designs about a favourite band can be fun, but be careful about artwork you do not own. A line of lyrics may be protected, so ask us before using it. Where a gift is about a gig, the date and city of the concert, set in an attractive typeface, is a safe and popular option.

Creative teenagers

If they draw, write or make things, ask them for a piece of their own art and print it. This is the gift that really says, "I noticed what you do". A drawing on a hoodie is the best kind of personalisation there is.

Friends and groups

A set of matching hoodies for a friendship group, with nicknames on the back, is a classic. It also works as a sibling gift.

Teens heading to a milestone

Leaving school, finishing exams or starting college are all good reasons for a gift. For leavers there is a whole category of designs, and our pages on school leavers hoodies and university society hoodies cover them.

Fit and sizes

Our children's range runs from age 3 to 16 and adult sizes from S to 5XL, with an oversized fit from S to 3XL. A teenager may be at the top of the children's range or at the bottom of the adult one, so check both. A useful approach is to measure a hoodie they already like, or to check the size label on one they wear most. Teenagers also tend to want a bit of room, so if you are unsure, go for the bigger of two sizes. Ask us if you want help deciding between children's and adult sizing.

Colours and design placement

We print on 14 garment colours. Black, grey and navy are the most worn, followed by white and sage or dusty colours. Bright neon is less popular than it was. For placement, the common choices are:

  • Small left-chest print: neat and understated.
  • Large back print: the current favourite, especially for a name, a slogan or an illustration.
  • Sleeve print: a short word or a number down one arm.
  • Centre chest: the classic, which suits slogans and drawings.

Making sure it is theirs

Where possible, involve the teenager. If you can find a way to ask them casually what kind of design they like, you will avoid disappointment. You can also let them choose the final design from three options you prepare. A gift that arrives with a note saying "choose a design from these" can be more appreciated than a surprise.

How to order

  1. Message us with the idea, size, quantity and date.
  2. Send the artwork as a PNG or PDF. We resize and adjust layouts but do not design from scratch.
  3. We confirm the order and take payment before starting the mockup.
  4. You approve the mockup, with up to five rounds of changes.
  5. We print and send. Next-day UK delivery is possible after approval.

A note on timing

Teenagers' birthdays and Christmas often fall close together in the year, and gift orders tend to bunch up in December. Leave time for a mockup and for delivery. Our guide to Christmas printing deadlines sets out how to work back from the date.

Gifts from friends and siblings

Teenagers often buy for each other, and a group gift between friends is a popular order. A group of four or five might choose the same hoodie in different colours, each with a nickname on the back. Siblings sometimes pool their money for a gift to a parent, in which case the teenager's own taste is less important than keeping the group happy. When a group of teenagers orders together, appoint one person to collect names, sizes and money before anything is sent to us, and set a closing date. Teenage group orders are the most likely to change at the last minute, so a clear deadline helps.

Respecting privacy and image

Some teenagers are sensitive about their image. A design that uses a photograph of them, or text that draws attention, may not be welcome. If you are unsure, choose something neutral, such as a small design or a back print, and let the teenager decide how to wear it. Never print a photograph of a young person without their agreement, and avoid anything that could embarrass them in front of friends.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size should I order for a teenager?

Check a top they already wear. Children's sizes run to 16 and adult from S, with an oversized fit from S to 3XL. If unsure, go up a size.

Can the teenager design it?

Yes. If they have artwork, send it as a PNG or PDF. We can adjust the size and layout.

Can I order one hoodie?

Yes. There is no minimum order.

Will the print survive regular washing?

A DTF print holds up well if the garment is washed inside out at a low temperature and not tumble dried hot.

Can you add a name or number on the back?

Yes. Send the exact spelling.
