What is an order of service?

An order of service is the printed booklet handed to guests as they arrive at a funeral, memorial or celebration of life. It guides everyone through the service — the hymns, readings, music and speakers, in order — and afterwards it becomes a keepsake many families treasure. Most UK orders of service are A5 booklets (a folded A4), with the front cover carrying a photograph, the person's name, their dates, and the date and place of the service.

What to include: a typical running order

  • Front cover — photograph, full name, dates, service date and venue, and often a short line such as "In Loving Memory" or "A Celebration of the Life of…"
  • Entrance music and welcome/opening words
  • Hymns or songs — printed in full where permitted (see our copyright guide for what can and can't be printed)
  • Readings and poems, with the reader's name
  • Eulogy / tribute — usually listed by speaker rather than printed in full
  • Committal and closing words
  • Exit music
  • Back cover — more photos, a thank-you note from the family, and details of the wake/reception and any preferred charity for donations

For a humanist or non-religious service, the same structure works with songs, readings and tributes in place of hymns and prayers — wording like "A Celebration of the Life of…" suits these services beautifully. Send us your running order however rough, and we'll shape it.

Choosing a format: pages, paper and covers

  • Size: A5 is the UK standard — comfortable to hold, familiar to guests. Larger formats are available for services with more content.
  • Pages: booklets are made in multiples of four (a folded sheet = 4 pages). An 8-page booklet suits most services; 12 pages gives room for full hymns and more photographs.
  • Paper & cover: a heavier silk cover with lighter inner pages gives the booklet a substantial, keepsake feel — we'll recommend the right combination for your design (our paper weights guide explains the numbers).
  • How many copies: order for your expected guests plus a margin — family members often want spares afterwards, and reprinting later is harder than ordering a few extra now.

How it works

  1. Send us your photos and wording. Share everything by WhatsApp, email or phone.
  2. We design everything for you. We'll create your design and send a free proof. Need changes? We'll revise it as many times as needed.
  3. We print and deliver. Once you approve the design, we'll professionally print your order and deliver it the very next working day anywhere in the UK.

Need everything urgently?

We understand that funeral arrangements often happen within days. If you're working to a tight deadline, get in touch as soon as possible. We'll guide you through the process, prioritise your order, and make sure everything is ready in time for the service. In some cases, same-day delivery may be possible depending on your location and order — just let us know how soon you need it and we'll always try to help.
