Leavers Hoodie Colours: How to Choose for Your Year Group
The colour decision causes more debate than any other part of a leavers hoodie order. Names get collected, the design gets agreed, and then a year group of thirty or two hundred people has to settle on one colour they will all wear in the same photograph. This guide walks through how schools and student reps make that choice without it dragging on for weeks, and what actually looks good once the print goes on.

Start With Three Questions
Before anyone looks at a colour chart, answer these three questions as a group. They cut the shortlist down quickly.
- Do we want school colours or our own colour? Some year groups like the link to the school badge. Others see the leavers hoodie as the first thing they choose for themselves, and deliberately pick something different from the uniform.
- Will it be worn after leaving? If the answer is yes, darker and more neutral colours tend to get worn for years. Bright novelty colours are great for the last day but often end up in a drawer by the autumn.
- One colour or a choice? A single colour gives the strongest group photo. Letting people choose from two or three colours makes everyone happier but complicates the order.
How Print Contrast Changes the Look
The hoodie colour is only half the picture. The names and the year on the back need to stand out against it, or the design disappears from more than a few steps away.
- Dark hoodies with light print — navy, black, bottle green or burgundy with white or gold print. This is the most reliable combination: crisp in photos and easy to read at a distance.
- Light hoodies with dark print — grey, sky blue or pastel shades with navy or black print. Softer and more relaxed, and good for primary school leavers.
- Bright hoodies — red, orange, purple or pink. These photograph brilliantly, but check the print colour carefully. Two strong colours side by side can clash or vibrate on camera.
Because we print with DTF, multicolour designs cost nothing extra, so a crest in full colour or a gradient on the year numerals is fine on any hoodie. We will flag poor contrast on the proof before anything is printed.
Popular Colour Combinations
These combinations come up again and again because they simply work. Use them as a starting point for a vote.
- Navy with white print — classic, smart and close to many school uniforms.
- Black with gold or silver print — the most “graduation” look; popular with Year 13 and sixth form.
- Bottle green with white print — strong in photos, especially outdoors.
- Heather grey with navy or black print — understated, and the colour most likely to be worn every week afterwards.
- Burgundy with cream or white print — a warm, slightly vintage college feel.
- Sky blue with navy print — bright but not loud; well liked by Year 6 groups.
We stock 14 hoodie colours. Ask us for the current colour chart, as it can change slightly between seasons.
Running a Colour Vote That Actually Ends
Open-ended colour discussions can run for weeks. A short, structured vote settles it in days.
- Agree a shortlist of three. The organiser or a small committee picks three combinations from the chart. More than three splits the vote.
- Show them as mock-ups. People choose better when they see the actual design on each colour. We can send simple mock-ups of your design on your shortlisted colours with your quote.
- Set a 48-hour deadline. Use a class group chat poll or a form, and announce in advance that the most popular option wins.
- Announce and move on. Once the colour is chosen, close the topic and move to collecting names and sizes.
One Colour or Several in the Same Order?
Mixing colours in one order is possible: everyone keeps the same design, and each person picks from an agreed set of two or three hoodie colours. It works well for large year groups where one colour will never please everyone. The trade-offs are a busier group photo and a slightly longer order list, because each line needs a colour as well as a name and size. If you choose this route, keep the print colour the same across all hoodies so the set still looks connected.
Matching the School Brand Without Copying the Uniform
If the school wants its colours represented, there are subtle ways to do it without the hoodie looking like PE kit. Use the school colour for the print rather than the hoodie; put a small crest on the front in full colour; or choose a darker or lighter shade of the school colour for the hoodie. Always check with the school before using its crest or name, as many schools have rules about how their badge is used.
Colour Advice by Year Group
- Year 6 and P7 — brighter and lighter colours suit younger children, and they show up well in end-of-term photos. Our Year 6 and P7 leavers hoodies guide covers sizing for growing children.
- Year 11 — the widest range of tastes. Darker colours with a bold print are the safe choice for a big group.
- Year 13 and sixth form — often prefer black, navy or grey with metallic-effect or white print, for a hoodie they will take to university.
Practical Points That Affect Colour
- White and very pale hoodies show marks quickly. They look sharp on the day but need careful washing.
- Very dark hoodies hide wear well and make print colours pop.
- Phone photos change colour slightly. If the exact shade matters, ask to see the colour chart rather than relying on a screen.
- Washing — inside out on a cool wash keeps both garment colour and print bright. See our care guide.
Colour Questions
Can different students have different hoodie colours?
Yes. Everyone keeps the same design and picks from an agreed set of colours. Just list the colour next to each name and size.
Can the print be gold or silver?
We can print gold-toned and silver-toned colours that read well on dark hoodies. Ask for a proof to see how it looks on your chosen colour.
Can you send mock-ups in different colours?
Yes. Send your design idea and shortlist, and we will show it on each colour so your year group can vote.
