Personalised Gifts for Couples: Matching Printed T-Shirts and Hoodies for Two

Gifts for couples tend to fall into two kinds. The first is the shared experience: a weekend away, a meal out. The second is the shared object, something the two of them own together and use. A pair of matching printed tops belongs in the second group. It can be funny, romantic, deliberately daft or a quiet nod to the way two people fit together. FabricForge prints matching sets, or a single top for each person with different designs, in full colour from a single item upwards, and sends them to you with DPD, Royal Mail, Parcelforce or our relay parcel service.

What kind of couple are you buying for?

A gift for two people works only if it suits them both. Here are the common types and the designs that tend to fit.

The newly engaged or newly married

Matching tops for the first Christmas as an engaged or married pair are among the most popular orders. Typical designs include "Mr" and "Mrs", the new surname, or the wedding date in a neat line. For couples who find "Mr and Mrs" old-fashioned, a pair of first names with a heart or a small symbol works equally well. Our page on hen, stag and wedding printing covers wider wedding-party options.

The long-married couple

Humour tends to carry the day here. "Together since 1989" with a number of years and a dry line, or a pair of tops where each has half of a phrase. The humour that comes from decades together is gentle, specific and rather hard to fake.

The new couple

The challenge is not to look too committed. A light-hearted design that jokes about the situation, such as a shared catchphrase or an inside joke, is safer than a heavy declaration. If you are buying for a couple you do not know well, stay away from anything intense.

The couple with a pet

A pair of tops that include the dog or cat's name is a lovely gift for a household where the animal is part of the family. If the pet is also getting something, take a look at our page on Christmas dog bandanas and pet gifts.

The couple who have just moved in together

A design that marks the address, the year or a house nickname makes a thoughtful present. The text can be small, just a line on the sleeve or beneath the chest design.

Two ways to design a pair

Identical tops

The same design on both tops, in the same colour. Simple, striking and good in photographs. Perfect for a shared joke or a couple's name.

Matching but different

Two designs that belong together, such as each top carrying one half of a phrase, or the same layout with a different name. This takes more thought but feels more special. A common version is a "his and hers" arrangement with the same artwork in different colours.

Complementary colours

If you do not want to look matched, the two tops can use different garment colours and the same artwork. Black and white is a classic combination, and grey with navy is quieter.

What to print

  • The couple's names or initials, in a simple typeface.
  • The date they met, got together or married.
  • A short line they say to each other.
  • A pair of illustrations, such as two mugs of tea, two penguins or two halves of a heart.
  • The year, if the gift is for a first Christmas together.

If it is their first Christmas, see our page on first Christmas T-shirts, which discusses designs for new couples and new families in more detail.

Choosing garments

We print on T-shirts and hoodies in 14 colours. A hoodie suits a couple who spend winter evenings at home, and a T-shirt suits one who is going to a party. If the couple are different sizes, which is very common, the oversized fit from S to 3XL allows a similar look on both, while standard adult sizes from S to 5XL cover most people. When you order, give us each person's size separately and, if possible, the size of a top they already wear. If you want the gift to be a surprise, ask a friend of theirs to check.

Who pays attention to the details

With a gift for two people, the little things matter. Check the spelling of both names, the date, and the order in which they appear. If the couple are not married, think about whether "Mr and Mrs" is appropriate. If they have a preferred way of writing a name, such as a nickname, use that rather than the full legal name. And check the artwork against the colour of the garment, because light lettering on a light top is invisible.

Ordering

  1. Tell us the idea, the two sizes and the date you need them by.
  2. Send the artwork as a PNG or PDF, or describe the wording exactly. We can resize and adjust the layout, but do not design from scratch.
  3. We confirm the details and take payment before starting the mockup.
  4. You approve a mockup, with up to five rounds of changes.
  5. We print and send. Next-day UK delivery is possible once you approve, depending on the time.

If it is a surprise

Tell us at the start and give us the delivery address you want. If you are sending it to your own home to wrap, say so. For larger plans with a deadline, look at our Christmas printing deadlines.

Beyond the matching top

Once you have decided on the tops, you may want to build the gift around them. A common idea is to pair the tops with a printed tote bag for the couple's shared outings, in the same design, or to give one top as the main present and a second smaller item as a surprise on Christmas morning. Another approach is to make the gift a set for a future occasion, such as a holiday: matching tops with the destination and the year, given before the trip. Whatever you choose, remember that the best couples' gifts tell a small story, and the story is clearest when the design is simple.

Things to avoid

A few traps are worth knowing. Do not choose a design that assumes more commitment than the couple has. Do not use a private joke they have not shared with you. Do not print anything you would not want to appear in a family photograph. And do not forget that two people often have different tastes in colour and fit, so offering a choice of garment colour for each is kinder than insisting on identical tops.
