A Fleece Dog Hoodie for Colder Days

Not every dog needs a coat, but the ones that do really feel the difference. Small breeds, thin-coated breeds, puppies and older dogs lose heat quickly on a damp British morning, and a light fleece layer helps them stay comfortable on walks and around a chilly house. This dog hoodie is designed to add warmth without bulk, so your pet can still move, sniff and play naturally.

The leash ring means you can clip a lead on for quick trips out, and the personalisation option turns a practical layer into something that is clearly theirs. A name across the back is the most popular choice, but you can also add a paw print, a short phrase or a small graphic.

Specification

We only list what the product actually is. If you need anything beyond this, ask us first.

  • Material: soft, warm fleece, cosy without being bulky
  • Leash ring: built in for lead attachment
  • Colours: Grey, Navy, Red and Black
  • Personalisation: optional DTF-printed name or design
  • Designed for: small to medium pets
  • Proof: free digital proof when you add personalisation

Which Pets Benefit From a Hoodie

Guidance from UK vets and animal welfare organisations is broadly consistent. A fit, healthy dog with a thick coat usually does not need extra clothing and may overheat in a warm home. The dogs that genuinely benefit are:

  • Thin-coated and small breeds such as greyhounds, whippets, chihuahuas and dachshunds
  • Puppies that have not yet built up their adult coat
  • Elderly, underweight or unwell dogs that struggle to regulate temperature
  • Dogs recovering from clipping or surgery, where the coat has been shaved short

As a general rule, these dogs benefit most when temperatures drop to around 0 to 5°C and below. Shivering, tucking the tail, lifting paws or slowing down on a walk are signs your dog is cold. Thick, double-coated breeds such as huskies rarely need a layer at all. Always watch your individual dog rather than relying on the thermometer.

How the Personalisation Is Printed

We personalise with DTF, short for direct-to-film. The name or design is printed onto a film with a white base layer, coated with an adhesive powder and cured. The film is then heat pressed onto the hoodie and peeled away so the print bonds to the fleece. DTF gives sharp lettering and full colour without separate screens for each colour, so a multi-coloured paw print costs no more to set up than plain text.

On a pet garment, DTF has another advantage. The print is thin and flexible, so it moves with the fabric when your dog runs, rolls or stretches.

Design Ideas and Artwork Tips

  • Name across the back is the classic choice and reads clearly from behind on a walk.
  • Keep it short. Small to medium pets have a small print area, so one name or two or three words work best.
  • Choose contrast. White or bright lettering stands out on Navy, Red and Black. Darker lettering suits Grey.
  • Bold fonts hold up better on fleece than fine scripts.
  • Festive versions are popular in winter. See our personalised dog Christmas outfits page for seasonal ideas.

How to Measure Your Pet

Take three measurements with a soft tape:

  1. Neck: around the neck where a collar sits.
  2. Chest: around the widest part of the ribcage, just behind the front legs. This is the most important measurement.
  3. Back length: from the base of the neck to the base of the tail.

Use the two-finger rule: you should be able to slide two fingers under the hoodie at the neck and chest. If your pet is between sizes or very fluffy, size up. The hood should never slip down over the eyes. Send us all three measurements and we will advise which size to choose.

Safety Notes

A personalised dog hoodie should make your pet more comfortable, never less. Please follow these simple rules:

  • Supervise. Do not leave your pet alone or asleep in the hoodie for long periods.
  • Check the fit every time. It should not rub under the legs, restrict breathing, pull on the neck or let the hood cover the eyes.
  • Watch for overheating. Take it off indoors, in warm weather and during energetic play. Heavy panting, drooling or seeking cool floors mean it is too warm.
  • Remove it if your pet is distressed. Freezing, hiding, scratching at the garment or restless pacing are signals to stop.
  • The leash ring is for convenience. For pulling dogs or anywhere you need real control, use a properly fitted harness underneath.

Getting Your Dog Used to Wearing It

Take it slowly. Let your dog sniff the hoodie first and reward calm interest with a treat. Drape it over their back for a few seconds, reward, and remove it. Over several short sessions, build up to putting it on fully and wearing it for a minute or two indoors before trying a walk. Never force it. If your dog is unhappy, stop and try again another day.

Care

Machine wash cool on a gentle cycle and air dry. If the hoodie is personalised, turn it inside out before washing and keep heat away from the print, so no tumble drying on high and no ironing over the design.

Dog Hoodie FAQs

When should my dog wear a hoodie in the UK?

In cold snaps, roughly 0 to 5°C and below, for thin-coated, small, young, elderly or unwell dogs, and any time your dog shivers or slows down in the cold. Healthy thick-coated dogs rarely need one.

How do I choose the right size?

Measure the neck, the widest part of the chest just behind the front legs, and the back length from neck to tail base. Send us all three and we will advise. If your pet is between sizes or fluffy, size up.

Is the leash ring strong enough for walking?

It is designed for clipping a lead on for convenience. For dogs that pull, or anywhere you need full control, use a properly fitted harness underneath.

Can I add my dog's name?

Yes. We print names and designs in full colour with DTF, and you will see a free proof before anything is printed.

Can cats wear this hoodie?

Yes, for cats that tolerate clothing. Introduce it gradually with treats, keep sessions short and remove it if your cat seems stressed.

What are the signs my pet should take it off?

Heavy panting, drooling, scratching at the hoodie, restricted movement, hiding or restlessness. Remove it straight away and let your pet cool down and settle.
