Hoodie Size Guide UK: How to Choose the Right Size for a Printed Hoodie

Hoodie Size Guide UK: How to Choose the Right Size for a Printed Hoodie

Choosing a hoodie size looks easy until the parcel arrives and the sleeves finish somewhere around the knuckles. Sizing is harder for printed hoodies than for ones bought in a shop, because a custom item is made to order and a wrong size cannot simply be swapped at a counter. This guide explains how to pick a size with confidence, how the standard and oversized cuts differ, how to size for groups and gifts, and what to do when two sizes both look plausible. FabricForge prints hoodies from a single item upwards and delivers by DPD, Royal Mail, Parcelforce or our relay parcel service.

The sizes we print

Adult hoodies run from S to 5XL in a standard fit. An oversized cut is available from S to 3XL. Children's sizes run from age 3 to 16, which covers young children through to most teenagers. That range matters because a family order, a team order or a school leavers order often mixes all three groups in one go. Each cut has its own shape, so the same letter does not mean the same measurement across them.

Standard fit versus oversized fit

Standard fit

A standard hoodie follows the body fairly closely: the shoulder seam sits near the edge of the shoulder, the body is neither tight nor billowing and the sleeve ends near the wrist. It suits people who want a neat look under a coat, or who prefer a design printed on the chest to sit flat and centred.

Oversized fit

An oversized hoodie is cut wider and longer, with a dropped shoulder, so the seam sits down the upper arm. It looks deliberately relaxed, and it is the current favourite for leavers hoodies, gift hoodies and streetwear-style designs. It also forgives measuring errors, because the garment is meant to be roomy. If you are between two sizes in an oversized cut, the smaller usually looks intentional and the larger looks very big, so think about the effect you want.

How to measure, step by step

The most reliable method uses a hoodie the person already owns and likes. Lay it flat on a table and measure two things with a tape. First, the width across the chest, from one armpit seam to the other. Second, the length from the top of the shoulder to the bottom hem. Compare those numbers with the hoodie you are considering, and ask us for the measurements of the size you are weighing up. If you are buying for yourself and do not own a suitable hoodie, measure your chest at the fullest point and decide how much room you want on top: a few centimetres for a neat fit, more for a relaxed fit.

Sizing as a gift

Gift buying is where the trouble starts, because you cannot ask the person to try it on. Three habits help. First, check the label of a hoodie or jumper they wear often. Second, ask someone close to them, such as a partner or sibling, to check it for you. Third, if the choice is still uncertain, pick the larger of the two sizes: hoodies are worn over other layers, and a roomy one is comfortable while a tight one stays in a drawer. For ideas on specific recipients, see our pages on gifts for him, gifts for her and gifts for teenagers.

Sizing for teenagers and growing children

Teenagers sit awkwardly between the top of the children's range and the bottom of the adult one. A tall fourteen-year-old may fit an adult S better than a children's 14, and a smaller sixteen-year-old may do the opposite. The sensible approach is to measure their favourite hoodie and compare against both. Because young people grow quickly, many parents choose one size up so the hoodie lasts through the next growth spurt, and the oversized cut is useful here because it looks right even when it is a little big.

Sizing for a group order

A group order multiplies the sizing problem. The best system is a single list where each person writes their name and size, with a closing date, handled by one coordinator. Do not guess on behalf of people who have not answered, because guesses are the main source of wrong sizes. If some people are unsure, suggest they measure a hoodie they own, or recommend the oversized cut, which is more forgiving across body shapes. Our guides to group order T-shirts and hoodies and school leavers hoodies explain how the list and the deadline work in practice.

Does the print change the sizing?

The print itself does not alter the fit. It does, however, affect how the design looks at different sizes. A design that sits nicely on a medium chest may look smaller on a 5XL and larger on a children's size, so we scale the artwork to the garment. In a mixed order, tell us whether you want every size to carry the same print dimensions or the same proportion of the chest, and we will lay it out in the mockup. The mockup is also the best moment to check that a back print is centred and a chest print sits above the pocket line.

Fit and fabric after washing

Cotton-rich hoodies can relax or shrink slightly with washing. Washing inside out at a low temperature and avoiding a hot dryer keeps both the fit and the print in good shape. Our care guide lists the steps, and the guide to custom hoodies goes into fabric and fit in more depth.

A quick decision guide

  • You want a neat, classic look: standard fit, true to your usual size.
  • You want a relaxed, modern look: oversized, true to your usual size.
  • You want maximum room or a layering piece: oversized, one size up.
  • You are buying a gift and are unsure: the larger of the two sizes.
  • You are buying for a growing child: one size up from their current fit.

How to order

  1. Tell us the hoodie style, the size or sizes and the date you need them.
  2. Send your artwork as a PNG or PDF, and a list of names and sizes if it is a group.
  3. We confirm the details and take payment before building the mockup.
  4. Check the mockup and ask for changes; up to five rounds are included.
  5. Once you approve it, we print and dispatch. Next-day UK delivery is possible after approval, depending on timing.

If you still cannot decide

Message us with the person's usual size in a hoodie or jumper, their build in a sentence, and whether they like a loose or neat fit. We will suggest a size and tell you how the print will sit on it. A short conversation before ordering saves a lot of disappointment afterwards.

Frequently Asked Questions

What sizes do your hoodies come in?

Adult S to 5XL, oversized S to 3XL and children's ages 3 to 16.

Is oversized the same as going up a size?

No. An oversized hoodie is cut wider and longer with a dropped shoulder, so it fits differently from a standard hoodie one size larger.

What if the size is wrong?

Because each hoodie is printed to order, check the size carefully before approving the mockup. Message us if you want help choosing.

Can I mix sizes in one order?

Yes. Send a list of names and sizes in one message.

Can I order a single hoodie?

Yes. There is no minimum order.
