Print Your Photo on a T-Shirt: Custom Photo T-Shirts and Hoodies in the UK
A photograph on a T-shirt is one of the oldest forms of personalisation, and one of the easiest to get wrong. The idea is simple: take a picture you love and wear it. The reality is that screens, cameras and fabric all treat an image differently, so a photo that looks wonderful on a phone can look flat, grainy or muddy on cotton. This page explains how to choose the image, prepare it and order it so the finished top looks the way you imagined. FabricForge prints full-colour photographs on T-shirts and hoodies from a single item upwards, and delivers by DPD, Royal Mail, Parcelforce or our relay parcel service.

How a photo is printed
We use DTF, short for direct to film. The image is printed onto a clear film, bonded with a powder, and pressed onto the garment with heat. It reproduces gradients and fine detail well, and it sits on the surface of the fabric with a soft, flexible feel. Because there is no screen to make for each colour, a photograph costs no more effort than a plain slogan to set up, which is why one-off photo gifts are possible. Our page on DTF printing explained goes deeper into the process.
Choosing a good photograph
Not every picture suits a shirt. The ones that work share several qualities.
- Sharp focus. If the face is soft on your phone, it will be soft on the fabric.
- Good light. Daylight pictures print far better than dim indoor ones, which turn muddy.
- A clear subject. One or two faces beat a crowd. A group of eight shrinks to a handful of dots.
- A simple background. Busy backgrounds compete with the face. A plain wall, sky or field is ideal.
- Enough resolution. A photo from a modern phone is usually fine, as long as it is the original and not a copy.
The most common photo mistakes
Sending a screenshot or a forwarded copy
Messaging apps compress pictures to save data. By the time a photo has been forwarded twice, much of the detail is gone. Always send the original file from your phone or camera.
Choosing a dark photo for a dark garment
A dark photograph on a black shirt disappears. Either choose a lighter garment or ask us to place the image on a white or pale background shape so it stands out.
Cropping too wide
A full-body picture of a small child in a field will be mostly field. Crop in on the face and shoulders before sending, or tell us the part you care about.
Ideas that work
Memorial and remembrance
A photograph of a loved one, with their name and dates, is a long-established way to remember someone. For funerals and anniversaries, see in loving memory T-shirts, which covers wording and layout with particular care.
Family and baby photographs
A new baby's first picture on a grandparent's tee is a regular order. A family portrait on a hoodie suits birthdays and big anniversaries.
Pets
A dog or cat's face is the most requested photo of all. Look at gifts for dog lovers for tips specific to animals.
Parties and groups
For hen, stag and birthday groups, a face of the guest of honour on every top is a good joke. See birthday group T-shirts.
Holidays and events
A scenic photograph from a trip, with the year, makes a keepsake. A single landscape often looks better than a person.
Layout choices
- Full chest. The photo takes up the main area. Best for faces and landscapes.
- Small chest. A smaller picture on the left side, discreet and neat.
- Back print. Larger image across the shoulders, with the front blank or minimal.
- Framed. A photo inside a simple border or shape, such as a circle or a heart.
- Collage. Several small pictures arranged in a grid. Works best with similar lighting across all the photos.
Colour and garment
We offer 14 garment colours. White and pale colours show a photograph truest, because the fabric does not interfere with the image. Darker garments can still work, but we may add a white backing so skin tones stay natural. Adult sizes run from S to 5XL, with oversized from S to 3XL and children's sizes from 3 to 16. A hoodie gives more space for a larger image on the back.
Text with a photograph
A short line beneath the image often finishes the design: a name, a date or a place. Keep it brief and in clear, thick lettering. If your photo already has text in the scene, such as a sign, avoid adding more.
Permission and copyright
We print photographs you own or have permission to use. Pictures taken by a professional photographer may be protected; check the licence before sending a copy. We cannot print copyrighted images, logos or celebrity photographs without permission. Photographs of children should be printed only with a parent's or guardian's agreement.
Ordering step by step
- Send us the original photograph and say what you want it to look like.
- Tell us the garment, size, quantity and delivery date.
- We confirm the details and take payment before building a mockup.
- You see the mockup and can ask for up to five rounds of changes, including cropping and positioning.
- When you approve, we print and dispatch. Next-day UK delivery is possible after approval, depending on timing.
Care
Turn the garment inside out, use a cool wash, avoid hot tumble drying and never iron directly on the image. The care guide has the full steps, and it is worth sharing with a gift recipient.
Photo gifts for particular occasions
Photo tops tend to be bought for milestones: a wedding anniversary, a significant birthday, a new baby or a family reunion. For anniversaries, a single photograph of the couple from the early years, with the number of years beneath, is moving without being sentimental. For reunions, a shared group photograph on every top is a keepsake that gets looked at for decades. For birthdays, a childhood picture of the person being celebrated is a reliable laugh. Whichever you choose, decide early who will collect the photographs and who will check that every face in the picture is happy to be printed.
Restoring and choosing old photographs
Old prints can be scanned at home or at a library, then sent as a file. Scan at a high resolution, keep the picture flat and avoid reflections. A faded colour print often looks better as a black-and-white image, which hides colour casts and gives a classic feel. If the original has a damaged corner, tell us the part you care most about, and we will position the image so the best part sits on the chest.
Frequently Asked Questions
What file should I send?
The original photo from your phone or camera. Avoid screenshots and pictures forwarded through messaging apps.
Will the colours match my screen?
Close, but not identical. Printed colours differ slightly from a backlit screen, and the mockup shows what to expect.
Can you edit or fix my photo?
We can crop and position it. We do not retouch or redesign pictures.
Can I print a photo on a hoodie?
Yes. Hoodies suit larger back prints especially well.
Is there a minimum order?
No. A single photo T-shirt is fine.
