How to Measure Your Pet
Three measurements: neck circumference, chest at the widest point just behind the front legs (the most important one), and back length from the base of the neck to the base of the tail. Use the two-finger rule for snugness; if your pet is between sizes or extra fluffy, size up. A good fit means the hood doesn't slip over the eyes.
When Does a Dog Actually Need a Coat?
UK vets and welfare bodies broadly agree: a fit, healthy, thick-coated dog usually doesn't need one — and can overheat in a warm home. Extra warmth genuinely helps thin-coated and small breeds (greyhounds, whippets, chihuahuas, dachshunds), puppies, elderly, underweight or unwell dogs, and dogs recovering from clipping or surgery. As a rule of thumb from veterinary guidance, around 0–5°C and below is when these dogs benefit most — and shivering or slowing down on a walk is the sign it's time for a layer (or to head home). Double-coated breeds like huskies rarely need one at all. Watch the individual dog, not just the thermometer.
Getting Your Dog Used to It
Go slowly. Let them sniff the hoodie, reward calm behaviour, drape it on for a few seconds and treat, then build up over several short sessions. Never force it — if your dog freezes, hides or pants anxiously, stop and try later. Signs it should come off: heavy panting, drooling, scratching at the garment, restricted movement or restlessness.
