UCL was founded in 1826 as a deliberately radical alternative to Oxford and Cambridge — the first university institution in England to admit students regardless of religion, and in 1878 among the first to open degrees to women on equal terms. The spirit of its intellectual godfather Jeremy Bentham lives on quite literally: his preserved auto-icon sits on public display in the Student Centre.
