England's First Civic University

Birmingham received its royal charter in 1900, growing out of Josiah Mason's science college of 1875 to become England's first civic — "redbrick" — university, with Joseph Chamberlain as its first chancellor. His memorial clock tower, "Old Joe", still towers over the Edgbaston campus and is claimed as the tallest freestanding clock tower in the world. The science is serious too: in 1940 John Randall and Harry Boot built the cavity magnetron here, the device that transformed wartime radar, and the university counts eleven Nobel laureates in its history. Today around 40,000 students study at Edgbaston.
