From Boots to a Green Campus Giant

Nottingham began in 1881 as University College Nottingham — where a young D.H. Lawrence later studied — and owes its famous campus to Jesse Boot, founder of Boots, who gifted the Highfields estate that became University Park, one of the largest and greenest campuses in the country. The royal charter came in 1948, and the science followed: Sir Peter Mansfield's work at Nottingham made MRI scanning practical, winning the 2003 Nobel Prize. Today around 36,500 students study here.
