An Ancient University in a Festival City

Founded in 1583, Edinburgh is one of Scotland's ancient universities and a heavyweight of the Enlightenment — Charles Darwin studied medicine here, Arthur Conan Doyle modelled Sherlock Holmes on his Edinburgh medical professor Joseph Bell, and in 1964 Peter Higgs predicted the boson at Edinburgh that CERN confirmed half a century later, earning the 2013 Nobel Prize.
