From Yorkshire College to Russell Group Giant

Leeds began as the Yorkshire College of Science in 1874 and received its royal charter as the University of Leeds in 1904. Today it's a Russell Group university of around 34,500 students, its campus crowned by the white Art Deco tower of the Parkinson Building — the symbol of the university. The history runs deep: J.R.R. Tolkien taught English at Leeds before Oxford, and William Henry Bragg carried out the X-ray crystallography research at Leeds that won the 1915 Nobel Prize in Physics with his son.
