Born From the Jet Age

The university began in 1952 as Hatfield Technical College, founded to train engineers for the aircraft industry on Hatfield's doorstep — the town where de Havilland built the Comet, the world's first commercial jet airliner. It became Hatfield Polytechnic and then, in 1992, the University of Hertfordshire. That aerospace heritage lives on in the name of the de Havilland campus, which together with College Lane hosts a student community of well over 30,000 in Hatfield — one of the largest in the region.
