When Local Print Was the Only Local Media

The Decline of Local Print

Press Gazette research published in 2024 found that at least 293 local newspaper titles in the UK have closed since 2005, and a UK Parliament committee separately reported more than 320 closures between 2009 and 2019. In 2007, 209 of England's 380 local authority districts had a daily local paper; by 2019, only 142 did.

What's Filled the Gap
