Roller, Pull-Up, Roll-Up — Are They the Same Thing?

Yes. "Roller banner", "pull-up banner", "roll-up banner" and "retractable banner" all describe the same product: a printed graphic that retracts into a base cassette. "Pop-up" is often used loosely for the same thing, but strictly a pop-up display is the larger multi-panel exhibition backdrop — see our Pop-Up Display if that's what you need. If you want a single freestanding graphic you can carry in one hand, this is it.

Which Size?

Width × height Best for
800/850 × 2000mm The two standards — stands, receptions, most events
1000–1200 × 2000mm Wider presence on larger stands
1500 × 2000mm Maximum single-cassette impact
Double-sided Central-aisle positions with traffic from both directions

Can You Use a Roller Banner Outside? An Honest Answer

Standard roller banners are indoor products. A typical indoor base weighs only ~3.5–4kg — not enough to resist wind — and water can damage the retracting mechanism. Genuine outdoor use needs a purpose-built outdoor banner with a heavy or water-fillable base plus ground pegs, and even then it's a fair-weather, short-term tool. For anything windy, wet or long-term outdoors, a feather flag or rigid Foamex/Correx board is the better choice — tell us where your banner will live and we'll steer you right.

How the Mechanism Works — and How Long It Lasts

The graphic rolls into an aluminium cassette on a sprung roller, and the spring is the part that wears. Budget mechanisms can lose tension after a year or so of heavy use (sagging, incomplete retraction), while heavier premium bases use more robust springs that hold up across hundreds of set-ups — the printed graphic is usually identical; you're paying for base weight, stability and mechanism life. Looked after, a good banner lasts several years.

Design Advice: Keep the Important Bits Up Top

Two rules matter most. The bottom ~150mm of your artwork disappears into the cassette — keep logos, contact details and QR codes out of it. And at a busy event, the lower third of any floor-standing banner is often blocked by people and tables — put your headline at the top and your key message in the upper two-thirds. Large format is viewed from distance, so 100–150 DPI at full size is plenty; supply with 3–5mm bleed.

Care & Storage

Retract slowly — never let it snap back. Store upright in the carry bag, cool and dry. Clean with mild soap and water only (solvents strip the coating). Never fold the graphic — creases are permanent.

FAQs

What size should I get? 850 × 2000mm is the most popular all-rounder; go wider for bigger stands.

Roller vs pull-up banner? Same thing — interchangeable names.

Can it go outside? Only a purpose-built outdoor model, and only in mild weather — ask us.

How long do they last? Several years indoors with care; the spring is the usual failure point.

Why does design matter at the bottom? The bottom ~150mm sits in the cassette and the lower third is often obscured at events.

Do you do double-sided? Yes.
