Certification — Exactly What's Certified
Certification depends on the colour you choose:
- Solid HV Yellow and solid HV Orange → EN ISO 20471:2013+A1:2016 Class 2
- Solid Orange also meets RIS-3279-TOM (rail environments)
- Two-colour/contrast versions → Class 1 only
- Other solid colours → enhanced visibility only, not certified
Hi-Vis Classes Explained (EN ISO 20471)
| Class | Min. fluorescent area | Min. reflective area | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Class 1 (lowest) | 0.14m² | 0.10m² | Low-risk, low-speed/off-road areas |
| Class 2 | 0.50m² | 0.13m² | Warehouses, delivery yards, utilities, general sites — this vest in solid yellow/orange |
| Class 3 (highest) | 0.80m² | 0.20m² | Roadworks, highways, rail, night work — needs sleeves, so a jacket/coverall or certified combination, not a vest alone |
The class your team needs is set by a risk assessment for the specific job — as a rule, higher speeds and higher risk demand a higher class.
How Printing Affects Compliance — The Honest Version
Certification works by area: the garment must keep the minimum fluorescent background shown above, and every print deducts from that area. A modest chest badge or small upper-back logo is normally fine; an oversized back print can reduce the fluorescent area enough to downgrade the class. Our honest guidance:
- Keep branding modest: left-chest badge plus a moderate upper-back name/logo
- Never print over the reflective tape — we won't, ever
- As a decorator we cannot re-test or re-certify a garment after printing — so if a specific class is legally required on your site, tell us and we'll size conservatively
Artwork & Wash Care
PNG with transparent background at 300 DPI or vector — a solid single-colour logo reads best on hi-vis. Care per the label: machine wash 40°C, do not tumble dry, do not iron, do not bleach, do not dry clean — heat and abrasion degrade both the fluorescent dye and the reflective tape, so gentle care extends the garment's working life.
FAQs
Can you print on hi-vis? Yes — on the fluorescent fabric, never the tape, sized to preserve the certified area.
Is printed hi-vis still compliant? It can be, if enough fluorescent area remains. Large prints can drop the class — match print size to your compliance need.
Which class do I need? Set by your site risk assessment — broadly, Class 2 covers most general sites and warehouses; Class 3 (jacket/coverall territory) for highways, rail and night work.
How should I size it? Generously — hi-vis is worn over other clothing.
Front and back print? Yes — chest badge plus upper-back logo is the standard setup.
How do I make it last? 40°C wash, air dry, no iron, no bleach.
Bulk pricing for site teams? Yes — quote-led.
