Feather vs Teardrop: Which Shape?

Feather flags are taller, give more print area and flutter dramatically — best for headlines, arrows and maximum height. Teardrop flags hold a taut, fixed shape so the design stays readable even in wind, with slightly less flapping fatigue — best for logo-led designs and a cleaner look. Neither is "better": it's height-and-movement vs readability-and-tautness. Your base choice matters more for stability than the shape does.

Which Base for Which Surface?

Surface Recommended base
Grass / soft ground Ground spike
Pavement / forecourt (hard standing) Cross base with water/sand weight
Indoors Cross base
Exposed, windy hard standing Heaviest water-filled base available

The flag must rotate freely on the pole — a fixed bottom lets the fabric twist and tear in gusts. Tell us if your site is exposed and we'll spec the fitting accordingly.

Why Flags Wear Out (An Honest Explanation)

Two forces kill every advertising flag. Wind causes flapping fatigue that frays the fly edge and stresses hems and stitching. UV fades the print — reds and blues first — and weakens the polyester. Flown continuously outdoors, a flag typically shows fading within a few months, and the realistic working life of a constantly flown flag is around 4–6 months. Nobody's advertising flag lasts years in continuous use — treat it as a consumable, budget for replacement flags (the pole and base last far longer), and extend its life by bringing it in overnight and in strong winds (above roughly 45kph / Beaufort 4–5, take it down), and never storing it damp.

Single vs Double-Sided

Single-sided flags show the design through the back in mirror image — typically 80–90% show-through, which reads fine for logos and symbols. Double-sided flags add a blockout layer so the design reads correctly from both directions — worth it on a street where traffic approaches both ways. Double-sided flags are heavier, so they need slightly more wind to fly.

Artwork

Bold, simple, high-contrast designs read best on a moving flag — a logo, a few words, an arrow. Keep critical text away from the fly edge (the outer edge frays first). We'll advise on your proof.

FAQs

Feather or teardrop — which is better? Feather for height, movement and print area; teardrop for readability in wind.

What base do I need? Spike for grass; cross/water base for hard ground — see the table.

Can flags stay out overnight or in rain? They can, but constant wind and UV shorten life fast — bring them in overnight and in strong winds.

How long do they last? Realistically 4–6 months in constant outdoor use; much longer used occasionally.

Why can I see the print through the back? Normal on single-sided flags — choose double-sided (blockout) if both sides matter.

Can I buy a replacement flag only? Yes — keep your pole and base, replace just the fabric.
