Roll Fold vs Z-Fold: The Panel-Width Trap
On a Z-fold, the three panels are equal width because each folds in the opposite direction. On a roll (C) fold, each panel tucks inside the previous one — so every inner panel must be progressively narrower, typically 2–3mm per panel and more on heavier stock, or the leaflet buckles and won't close flat. This is the single most common mistake in customer-supplied roll-fold files. Ask us for the template for your exact size and fold, and keep text at least 5mm clear of every fold line.
Artwork Requirements
Design at the flat size in reading order — a common mistake is supplying artwork at the folded size. Use a print-ready PDF in CMYK at 300 DPI with 3mm bleed. Heavy ink coverage across a fold can crack on thicker stocks, which is why anything over 170gsm is creased before folding.
FAQs
Why do my roll-fold panels need different widths? Because inner panels fold inside the outer ones and need room to nest. Equal panels jam against the fold, so the leaflet splays or cracks.
Do folded leaflets need creasing? Anything above ~170gsm should be creased first — creasing compresses the fibres along the fold so the surface doesn't crack, especially on dark or laminated designs.
Do I design at the folded or flat size? Flat — the folded size is what your customer holds, but artwork is set up flat.
What's the difference between a C-fold and a Z-fold? Both make six panels: a C-fold rolls inwards (inner panel narrower); a Z-fold zig-zags with equal panels.
Can leaflets be laminated? Yes, on silk or gloss stocks — not uncoated.
Can you add a tear-off section? Yes — perforation at the centre or one-third position.
