From West Ham Tech to the Waterfront

UEL traces its story to the West Ham Technical Institute, opened in 1898 and celebrated in its day as a "people's university" for East London. It became North East London Polytechnic in 1970, the Polytechnic of East London in 1989, and gained university status in 1992. In 1999 it opened the Docklands campus on the Royal Albert Dock — the first new university campus built in London for half a century — with waterfront halls looking out over the water. Today around 26,700 students study across Docklands, Stratford and University Square Stratford.
