A University Built for the East End

Queen Mary began life as the People's Palace, opened on Mile End Road in 1887 to bring education and culture to East London. It grew into East London College, joined the University of London in 1915, and was renamed Queen Mary College in 1934. Mergers with Westfield College (1989) and with the medical schools of St Bartholomew's — attached to Britain's oldest hospital, founded 1123 — and The London Hospital Medical College, England's first purpose-built medical school (1785), created today's Russell Group university of around 24,600 students. The canalside Mile End campus is one of the few self-contained campuses in inner London — complete with the historic Novo Cemetery sitting right in the middle of it — with Whitechapel and Charterhouse Square home to Barts and The London medics and dentists.
