Two Victorian Institutions, One Modern University

London Met was created in 2002 by one of the biggest mergers in UK higher education — London Guildhall University joining the University of North London. Its roots run much deeper: to the Metropolitan Evening Classes for Young Men of 1848 in the City, and to the Northern Polytechnic Institution, opened in Holloway in 1896 to bring technical education to working North London. Today around 13,700 students study across the Holloway campus — whose Science Centre houses one of the largest science teaching laboratories in Europe — and the Aldgate campus, home to art, architecture and design.

London Met's students' union runs societies, sports clubs and events across both campuses — cultural and faith societies, course groups, volunteering and fundraising — while Aldgate's art, architecture and design students add degree shows, exhibitions and collective projects to the calendar.
