A New Name, Two Historic Institutions

City St George's was formed on 1 August 2024 when City, University of London merged with St George's, University of London — creating a university of around 27,000 students with two very different histories. City began in 1894 as the Northampton Institute on Northampton Square in Clerkenwell, became City University by royal charter in 1966, and is home to the Bayes Business School, The City Law School and one of the UK's best-known journalism schools. St George's is far older: a medical school founded in 1733, where Edward Jenner — the pioneer of vaccination — trained, and where Henry Gray wrote Gray's Anatomy. Today St George's students study inside a working teaching hospital in Tooting.
